I've used self development material extensively during my career to help improve my social and professional life. As actuaries we are trained up to be very book smart and logical in our thinking. We are left to our own devices to become street smart (how to make theory work in the real world environment) and to develop our creative side of our intellect. I mean, give us a problem and we will look at it and solve it in record time. We will use the theories we have learned and apply the logical intellect (the bit that does maths between our ears) we as actuaries are typically blessed with. But what skills are we lacking? Did we concentrate so hard on those bloody exams that we forgot there is more to life than being number crunchers?

The television series, "Beauty and the Geek" makes it obvious. Those beauties have confidence, social and creative skills most of the intelligent and talented geeks hardly developed. I personally believe balanced people are far happier and often successful people in life. So if you know which areas you need some help in, why not make the effort in developing them. The answer is most people probably don't know how to. In this section I invite people to help each other in developing skills actuaries often need in their careers... from public speaking, coping with intimidating meetings, exam nerves, focusing on studies (after a day of work) to talking to your boss. Neuro-Linguistic Programming(NLP) and Hypnotherapy are just some of the many methods we can use to develop. Below are some areas I personally found self development useful in:

PS The geeks most popular with the beauties were those that made an effort in becoming street smart and were confident enough to be creative... the proof is in the pudding!
